Pre-surgical Checklist

• Did you take away all food and water sources after 10pm the
night before your procedure.
• Are you prepared to drop your pet off from 7:30am-8:00am at the clinic on the
day of the procedure?
• Do you know what procedure is being performed?
• Do you need an estimate for this procedure?
• Do you know the possible complications of anesthesia? And your pet’s
procedure?

Please remove all food and water sources from your pet at 10pm the night before
the procedure. Drugs used in the process of sedation/anesthesia can cause
nausea. If your pet vomits under anesthesia this can lead to ASPIRATION
PNEUMONIA. A serious and potentially fatal complication of anesthesia that can
be prevented in most cases.

Your pet needs to be dropped off at the clinic at 8AM. The procedure will not start
until later in the day but our medical professionals use this time to perform a
preoperative examination, place catheters and perform bloodwork. We can also
use this time to clear up any last questions/worries you have about the procedure.
It is important that everyone involved in your pet’s care knows exactly what you
want done and where. For consistency and clarity make sure that the description
of the procedure matches exactly what you have discussed with the doctor.

Surgical treatments can be unpredictable. Often, we are required to make
judgment calls during the procedure with no time to call and consult you on
specifics. This is why it is important that we know your wishes. We understand that
surgery is expensive. We will always try to honor our estimates to you to the best
of our ability. However, we need to clearly know if something is out of your budget
so we can plan and advise accordingly.

You should know that anesthesia always comes with risks. It is not something that
is done lightly. It can also be very safe when done correctly on a healthy patient.
Some things will be likely to happen afterwards and others hardly ever happen. Do
you know what to expect? Do you have questions?
